the background

Shelby Tate

Shelby Tate is a transformational coach, yoga and meditation teacher, and writer based in New York City. Her address changed often growing up and again in her adult life. New schools, new cities, and new ways of walking into a room and making it feel comfortable (fast). That skill turned out to be the foundation of everything: reading the room quickly, finding the throughline between drastically different environments, pivoting and making people feel seen and heard and understood.

An academic advisor once pulled her aside and said: I don't know what you want to do, but it should involve events and people. That didn't land at the time, but now, looking back, the string is winding, but defined.

The work today is the sum of all of it. Every address, every room, every road taken for the wrong reasons that turned out to be exactly right.

the travel

Forty-five countries. Superyachts across oceans. Retreats across hemispheres. Working and living in places most people only visit once. The world was never a detour from the work. It was how the work got built.

When you have lived inside that many different ways of moving through a day, you stop assuming your way is the only one. That changes how you coach. It changes how you listen. It changes what you notice in a room.

The world is the curriculum. She has not finished studying, and she does not want to study alone. The group trips are where the world becomes the room. Join her here.

the teaching practice

700 HR E-RYT through Yoga Alliance, the highest internationally recognized teaching credential in yoga. That 700 hours spans mixed hatha vinyasa, meditation and pranayama, and yoga therapy. But her favorite part is the philosophy that holds it all together.

The best teachers are practitioners themselves. The best practitioners honor the roots of yoga, which extends well beyond the physical practice. She brings the full message of yoga to a world trying hard to whitewash it of its depth. The credential is proof. The practice predates it.

She has sat Vipassana. She is two years into a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. A Critical Sexuality Coaching certification is next. Formal education is ongoing and there are no plans to stop.

She teaches in studios, corporate rooms, at retreats, and online. She hosts her own retreats, her own series, her own events, in person and through a growing online community. The container changes. The work is always the same.

The Wrong Roads.

The first novel, in progress. Autobiographical fiction — Cabo San Lucas, commission-only timeshare sales, crew culture, and a version of herself she had to become before she could become this one. She went at 21 looking for freedom and found a story she has been trying to write ever since. Some roads turn out to be exactly wrong in exactly the right way.
